Tourist Centre

Today's Temp: 4 - 10°c
Today's spending: 35.37 euro
Total Distance to date: 12569 km
Total spending to date: 210.04 euro

Had a very good full complementary breakfast from the hostel but the morning weather still snowing badly with strong wind. The hostel internet not allow to upload photos , so went out at 9.30am under bad weather for a snow seeing tour , found one internet cafe but the charges was sky high for 12 euro per hour. Asked why so expansive " This is a tourist centre!" Ridiculous! Went back to hostel to warm up and had my left over food for lunch. Went out the 2nd time when the snow stopped at 3 pm. This time was lucky to find this internet only charged 2 euro per hour. And also taken more pictures. I'll definitely not going to Innsbruck and Switzerland near the Alpine under such cold weather. Most probably to Munich in Germany and cross over to France. If the weather continued to be bad, I might consider train to Paris, that's the last thing I want to do....

hello Meng. enjoyed the scenery of austria. I grew up in Kempten and Augsburg, Germany and the bad weather in between october and march was one of the reasons, why I came to OZ in 1966. toughen it out and try to make Paris by bike !!! take care Gunter { glen waverley australia }

If Meng has good rain gear, warm clothing and enough funds, there is absolut NO reason, why he could not ride to Paris on bike. Just take special care to not get sick and catch a cold. It would be fun to ride with him for a day or two.

@Gunter: another winter bad weather fugative from Germany (wieder so ein Winter-Schlechtwetter-Fluechtling aus Deutschland ;-))No, Germany is not paradise in winter, I agree, but we also say here "there is no bad weather, just wrong clothing", whatever ;-)Mr. Meng is on his way to Paris BY bike! And I am proud of him, when he arrives in Paris.

p.s.: he has made me hungry for Mongolian lamb ribs, I saw on his blog. I will go to China and look for them in 2009 (no joke!). Then I am retired, and can do my big once-in-a-lifetime bike adventure.

Hello Meng! I am so glad you made it to Salzburg ok. After you left we got more than a half a meter of snow, and it has been snowing for 3 days now. It is very cold, and the snow does not melt, rather it is piled up on the farm house, on the trees, everywhere (and the trees were not done losing their leaves). Erwin, my husband, made the suggestion that you could go to Freilassing and then to Munich. It is not as high a mountain and it takes you north out of the alps. I don't know how much snow they got in the west, but crossing the alps south to Italy may be too difficult with a bike.

About the building in the picture, is it Melk?

With respect to Bernd, have you tried crossing the alps in 1-3 meter deep snow? The snow plows are even fighting the masses at the moment :)

Take care Meng, and best wishes.

Meng is on a bike trip to Paris, (http://www.beijingtoparis.com). No mountains at all, riding to Munich makes sense. He will encounter hills, but no mountains on his way to Paris. I would like to ride a day with him, when he comes through Baden-Wuerttemberg or Heidelberg. If he stays south he will encounter the Vosges mountains and the mountains of the Black forest, therefore head north in Baden-Wuerttemberg. I suggest he study the map for the best route without mountains. Yes, Malaysia Boleh (Malaysia can do!) I think is the correct translation?

Hello Meng,

About the plants in your picture (the ones with the yellow flowers), I think it is white mustard plants. They have flowers and leaves like that!

Hope you are staying warm! You are not far now I imagine! Go, go, go!

Hi Meng,

Them sure are wonderful pics. Is your thermometer right? Snowing at 4 ºC. Do keep yourself warm, huh.
With global warming, unpredictable weather and season is becoming the norm. So better follow expert advice and head for North a bit to avoid higher altitude ground.
Best wishes and luck ahead.
