51-year-old ex-NS trainer to cycle from Beijing to Paris

IF cycling 100km is a challenge for many, Meng Fook Cheun is taking it a few steps further by cycling 15,000km from Beijing to Paris on a recumbent bicycle.

Called the Beijing to Paris Challenge: The Malaysian Approach, Meng’s backpacking journey will require him to cover 15 countries like Krygzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Turkey, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, Germany and Switzerland within a minimum of six months.

Extraordinary bike: Meng on the recumbent bicycle that he will be using for his crosscountry adventure from Beijing to Paris.
The challenge’s aims include promoting an environmentally friendly way of travelling, encouraging people to ride bicycles as a healthy and cheap activity, and learning new cultures while promoting Malaysia.

Meng, 51, is a member of the Association of Backpackers Malaysia (ABM) and was part of the core team in the Trans Banjaran Titi-wangsa ‘97 climb 10 years ago.

The climb required the team to walk across the 158km Longest Mountain Trail in Malaysia for 20 days, which covered seven mountains, including Gunung Chamah, Gunung Yong Yap and Gunung Korbu.

“The climb couldn’t satisfy my appetite (for adventure),” said the former National Service trainer who took three months to plan for this challenge.

Meng will be doing regular photo and story updates, whenever possible, on his blog at http://beijing2paris.blogspot.com/

Besides camping and cooking equipment like an MSR fuel stove and bottle, sleeping bag and tent, his bags will include items like a digital camera, rechargeable batteries and a portable hard disk for photo-taking and storage purposes.

He estimates that he will be spending about RM20,000 in total, of which RM5,000 went to his preparation while RM15,000 is for his daily expenses (RM75 a day).

He explained that the difference between a recumbent bike and a mountain bike is that the former has a reclining seat while the latter’s is upright.

“Cycling on a recumbent bike doesn’t make a person’s bum so sore, so the only pain will be on the leg to do all the pedalling.”

On April 4, he will fly on a budget airline to Hanoi, Vietnam, and take either a train or express bus to Beijing, China.

Meng will begin the challenge at Tiananmen Square, Beijing on April 10 and cycle westwards along the Silk Road.

“I’ll be using the shorter route, that also has less traffic, to travel from Beijing to the Chinese border at Kashi. I’m targeting to reach Paris by mid October,” he said.

“Once I reach Paris, I’ll see if I can continue cycling to London and visit my sister there. The Paris-London leg will depend on factors like whether I have enough money and strength to continue.”

Meng said that some of his biggest challenges are: language barrier, sandstorms (climate) and security.

ABM president Datuk Dr Wong Sai Hou, who is also Kampung Tunku assemblyman, said he would be presenting an initial fund of RM2,000 to Meng, on behalf of the association.

“If he has any problems during the challenge and requires assistance, I’ll contribute more funds in my capacity as state assemblyman,” said Wong.

“When Meng comes back, we’ll be inviting him to conduct or attend functions to motivate the younger people in terms of character building and backpacking. He’s an example of what the nation needs – a person of good character with good motivation.”
