Day 49 May 28 Mon - Shanshan to Turpan

Many of these cage-like air ventilated for drying the grapes into resin
Sand mountain views on downhill slope to Turpan
Oasis of greenery and stream flowing
Statue of Sun Wukong at the entrance with Flaming mountain at the background
There are few caves at the far end where we saw round openings like doors

Watermelon stop, ohmmm... so nice so cool when you riding under hot sun at temp 42 C
Now I know how many kilo I lost after 49 days of hard pedalling 4 kilo but 70 kilo I am still overweight according to my BMI.
Road side watermelon around 5 rmb each taste no different from Malaysia
Great temptation to fall asleep after we finished the whole watermelon under nice "bed"
Muslim architectures are commonly seen in Xinjiang

Guesthouse entrance in Shanshan
Our 20 rmb each room in Shanshan
Chicken drumstick and BBQ lamb sticks with roti nan

Today's Distance: 97km
Today's Temp: 30 -42 degree C
Average Speed: 17.3 max:51.0
Time on Bike: 5 hr36 min
Ave climb: 1% max: 6%
Trip altitude: 236m max: 498m
Today's spending: 45.0 rmb
Total Distance to date: 3486 km
Total spending to date:3211.0 rmb
The journey to Turpan the hottest so far with midday temp recorded 42 C and known to
be the hottest spot in China . At 154 m below sea level in Lake Iding ,the 2nd lowest depression in the world (after Dead Sea ). The temp is believed to be above 50C in summer. Along the G312 road , as you descend, the sand mountain and the oasis green valley views is heartbreaking ,never seen before in my life . On a hot day like this ,we had eaten 2 watermelon kept cold in icebox and 3 bottles of cold soft drinks, plus 2 very nice cheap ice-creams. We also passed by a tourist spot in Flaming mountains where the popular Chinese novel "Journey to the West" Sun Wukong used a big magic fan to extinguish the braze to protect his master monk Tang Xuan Zang. Another tourist attraction is the Grape Valley but being not the harvest season in Sept , there is really no point to pay 40 rmb. Anyway we had seen many by the road sides. Turpan is apparently named as the Grape city in China. By 6.00pm we checked into a guesthouse for 20 rmb each . Dinner we have Lok-Lok ,not dipping in hot water but everything went in a tank of hot boiling oil under deep fried .

wow it amazed me human endurance and patient with nature and discomfort.Last year i travelled by suv to china central and north proceeded to inner mongolia,to russia siberia then turned back to outer mongolia, western part of china, kumin to laos, thailand then back to Malaysia.it was sweet and exciting though the travel can be tiredsome and boring.Anyway travellers like us need to encouraged each other. So my friend keep up and never give up.sweet dream also haha.

Great to see you are going strong, enjoying each day's experience n food. Some news about your hometown- Raja Nazrin & Zara Salim Davidson (niece of Tunku?) had a royal wedding in K.Kangsar last month, hosted a feast for the rakyat. Other news- the world's 2nd largest court complex (our very own in Jln Duta one)- ceiling collapsed n pipe burst causing flooding 2 separate incidents in 1 month; Putrajaya pipe burst in same month, Parliament leaking in same month..Samy Vellu said not his job,Parliament house said not their job, PM told them not to fight but just do the job.. our PM must be kept so busy..small things like this he has to step in..
Take care.

A reply from Heather's blog at,

http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/HeatherB2P

"Meng is good. We have been stuck in Urumqi for 7 days now dut to my need for a Chinese visa extension and for a Kaz visa. Meng has been very patient. Unfortunately to top it all off, he has been unable to access his blog from here. He has problems with blogspot at lots of places. He was unable to get on to it at all in Beijing and in several other cities enroute. Here in Urumqi he can open but not log on - very frustrating for him seeing we have been stuck here so long.

Hi All,

Since Meng's blog has gone kaput, and if he has not been eaten or in prison, it is safe to assume that if you follow Heather's entertaining blog on CrazyGuyOnABike, address somewhere in these comments, the bugger is alive and well.

Like I told Heather, this trip has got a spare blog even. Hats off to bike tourists lugging a laptop!

Ms Pauline??

Meng had a crash going downhill from 4000m asl, last Sunday June 10, Kyrgystan. Bike fell on him, sore shoulder, speedometer broken. All else OK. Then got attacked by a big black dog.......

Hi Meng,
Very nice pic and naration from here and Heather's site. Seems like life is not that bad for you as there's a roof over the both of you most of the time. Bet the only complain from you is the pack of bones are more creeky in the morning, eh.
Pedal on, my friend as Mandarin speaking territory is coming to an end and more challenging unknown is just ahead. I'll be looking forward to your updates soon.
Blog sites are a No-No at my office but I can still access Heather's.

Update news from home:
-SMART tunnel got flooded together with Kay Ell.

Hello, Uncle Meng.

This is an inspiring feat you've undertaken. I hope to be cheering you on from my own little European bicycle touring trip. I'm also proud to be carrying a Malaysian flag tied to my bicycle. I actually met your German counterpart, Daniel N. Lang, cycling from Paris to Beijing (opposite direction) and we cycled downhill together between Eze to Menton via Monaco. Send my greetings when you meet up somewhere in the middle.

Blessings, Alex.

Eagerly waiting for more news from you.

Belated Happy Father's Day to you.
